Affiliate marketing is a marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's marketing efforts. Examples include rewards sites, where users are rewarded with cash or gifts, for the completion of an offer, and the referral of others to the site. The industry has four core players: the merchant (also known as 'retailer' or 'brand'), the network, the publisher (also known as 'the affiliate') and the customer. The market has grown in complexity to warrant a secondary tier of players, including affiliate management agencies, super-affiliates and specialized third parties vendors. (Wikipedia)
This is the trend on some social networking sites because they need more members to join them. More members joining them means more advertisement. These social networking sites are similar to Facebook, MySpace, and Multiply. The difference is that they pay you for every one that you refer to them.
Some social networking sites (like MyLot and PeopleString), offers people points, cash points, friend points, etc. that can be converted to Cash. The points are accumulated when you refer a friend, when you post on their forums, use their e-mails. It's quite easy to earn money while Facebook-style socializing. I prefer signing-up on MyLot and PeopleString rather than referring friends on FriendFinder. (although I must take a look at AdultFriendFinder! *wink**wink*)
